Projection Mapping for Museums: Creating the Preamble Experience at Sardar Patel Memorial
Client: Sardar Patel Trust
AV Consultant: M/s Clarity Consulting (designed by the late Mr. Kelvin-Ashby King)
AV Integrator: Sigma AVIT
Location: Karamsad, Gujarat
Project Overview
The Preamble Experience at the Sardar Patel Memorial introduces visitors to the story of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and India’s freedom movement through an immersive combination of projection, audio, lighting, and environmental effects.
As the opening stage of a multilingual visitor journey lasting more than two and a half hours, the space uses projection mapping for museums together with spatial audio and centralized show control to establish the historical context from the moment visitors enter.
The Challenge
The Preamble needed to create an engaging introduction while connecting seamlessly with the main basement narrative experience that follows.
Projection, narration, lighting, and environmental effects had to remain precisely synchronized so that visitors experienced one continuous storyline across both spaces.
The use of projection mapping for museums also required careful alignment with the architectural and scenic surfaces while maintaining visual consistency throughout the experience. The system also had to support continuous public operation and remain straightforward for museum staff to manage.
The Sigma AVIT Approach
Sigma AVIT integrated the preamble into the memorial’s centralized Medialon show-control architecture.
Each visual, audio, lighting, and environmental sequence was programmed according to a synchronized timeline, helping the Preamble establish context and guide visitors into the next stage of the journey.
The approach to projection mapping for museums focused on coordinating projected content with narration, lighting cues, and visitor movement so that each technology layer supported the overall historical narrative.
Multilingual narration was also integrated into the entry experience, enabling visitors from different linguistic backgrounds to engage consistently with the story.
What We Implemented
1. Centralized Show Control: Medialon show control coordinates projection, narration, lighting, environmental effects, and automated sequences.
2. Projection & Media Playback: Panasonic projection systems and BrightSign media playback support synchronized projection mapping for museums across the Preamble Experience.
3. Multilingual Audio: Williams AV infrared audio transmission systems support narration for different visitor groups.
4. Dynamic Lighting: Lutron and DMX-based systems synchronize lighting cues with projection and narration.
5. Operational Control: Automated diagnostics, centralized monitoring, and an iPad-based interface support simplified day-to-day management.
The Outcome
The completed Preamble Experience gives visitors a coordinated introduction to the memorial before they continue into the Main Basement Narrative Experience.
By combining projection mapping for museums with multilingual narration, lighting, spatial audio, and centralized show control, the experience establishes a consistent narrative flow from the beginning of the visit. For museum teams, centralized monitoring and simplified controls support reliable operation across regular visitors, educational groups, and special presentations.
Setting the Stage for the Journey Ahead
The Preamble Experience demonstrates how projection mapping for museums can help establish historical context and guide visitors into a larger storytelling journey.
Through synchronized AV integration, Sigma AVIT created an opening experience that connects directly with the wider memorial narrative and prepares visitors for the immersive journey that follows.
